Protecting your posterior: the company designs custom 3D bicycle seats
With gas prices soaring, bicycling is becoming more and more popular. It’s estimated that more than 15% of Americans cycle regularly, according to Statista, a market and consumer data company. A company in Europe is trying to make this ride a little more comfortable. The engineers at Posedla, a Prague-based company, say protecting your posterior is their specialty. “We’re butt specialists, so that’s our job right now,” says Martin Ripa, co-founder of Posedla. In their laboratory, the Czech company designs bicycle seats in 3D by analyzing the body of a cyclist. “His physiology, his needs, his riding style and other parameters. And based on these individual characteristics, we create the saddle”, explains Jiri Duzar, co-founder of Posedla. But getting a smoother ride doesn’t come cheap, a specialty seat will set you back around $400. To create this specialized seat, a customer receives memory foam in the mail. They place their derriere on a memory foam cushion to get a mold of their back. The client then uploads photos of their print to an interactive website. “The client needs to take nine photos in total, one image from top to bottom, then eight from all sides covering all angles,” says Duzar. Experts then analyze a cyclist’s stress points to create a custom seat from a 3D printer. It was a new experience for cyclist Lukas Zahradnicek. “I feel really, really good. So I’m really looking forward to riding,” he said. Posedla isn’t the first company to create 3D bike seats, but claims they are the most personalized.
