Phil Nicoletti Talks Tomac vs. Sexton at 2022 Pro Motocross Finals & More
It may be the off season, but that doesn’t mean we’re letting Philthy Phil Nicoletti slack off on writing his weekly column for us here at X runner online. Yes, he grumbled when he sent in this week’s questions, but luckily he still loves getting paid and answered this week’s questions. Read Phil’s words on Eli Tomac’s paychecks, last weekend’s 450 battle and Jett Lawrence.
Email [email protected] if you like next week.
(Note: some questions have been slightly edited for clarity.)
Something you never talk about on a motorcycle is salaries and bonuses. Maybe you can shed some light on what someone at the top of the line could earn like say Eli Tomac, with salary, overall wins, championship wins and sponsors like Alpinestars, Oakley, Monster, etc. .
What about the rest of the factory guys who might have championship titles? How far are they and someone like Chase Sexton. What would a team have to offer him to keep him away from HRC? (only asking while we read about it on youtube so it must be true lol) Is this a taboo subject?
All my wishes,
Ben from Texas
Yeah, we never talk about it and we never will because our sport is so low key. Nothing is accessible to the public. Like any sport, there are pay grades for us runners. But a guy like Eli, Kenny and Coop are all pretty much short of pay. It’s really hard to find exact numbers, but I think with Eli I’d be pretty close. These are not real numbers but I think they are in the ballpark:
$1–1.5 million from Yamaha
$1 Million SX Championship Bonus
$1 Million or $750,000 MX Championship Bonus
$450,000 Monster deal to help Yamaha deal
$120,000 round per win all inclusive
$75,000 Alpinestars Equipment Deal with $500,000 Championship
All championship bonuses are fairly similar for each manufacturer and driver, as well as per round. Some might be a bit higher per spin, potentially 150,000 max. Then B-tier guys on factory teams could be 30% off that gear number. Again, this is all just a guess, but pretty close.
