Mark Eaton recalled many shots he blocked and another
For older Las Vegas sports fans, the picture is frozen in time.
Forum Blue-clad Kareem Abdul-Jabbar throwing a sky hook for the basket against the Utah Jazz.
An even taller guy, in a white uniform with purple, green, and yellow piping, waving his arms in a futile attempt to block him.
History is being written as the ball tucked into the net for the 31,420th and 31,421st points in Abdul-Jabbar’s illustrious career, pushing him past Wilt Chamberlain atop the list of NBA career scorers.
The tall guy wearing a Mardi Gras trim was Mark Eaton, who was 64 when he died on May 28 after apparently crashing his bike in Utah.
“When that image came out of Kareem’s goal and Mark defended unsuccessfully… he thought it would be (how he was remembered),” said Las Vegan Laura Herlovich, Jazz PR director during the 1983 season. -84 when the NBA club helped christen the Thomas & Mack Center by playing 11 home games in Las Vegas.
“Reading Mark’s career summaries, they’ve been so brilliant. Isn’t it nice that his legacy is more than just one unsuccessful blocked shot? “
While rarely off the bench at UCLA, Eaton blocked 3,064 shots as a pro, earning him twice the NBA Defensive Player of the Year and once in the all-star league team.
He also campaigned on behalf of other retired NBA players and forged lasting friendships with contemporary players, such as current jazz great man Rudy Gobert, with whom he shared a passion for pedaling bikes. tailor-made in scenic Utah vistas.
According to Herlovich and former gaming programs, Eaton was 7 feet 4 inches tall, but he will always be remembered in his personal life for never having looked down on anyone.

Around the horn
–Kris Bryant is having an MVP-like season for the Cubs, which is also giving the team’s stingy owners a big headache.
The former Bonanza High star is part of Chicago’s holy trinity of pending free agents – he, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo are all in the final year of their contracts. The Cubs are unlikely to be able to afford / want to keep all three, and Bryant was thought to be the first to make a trade.
But now he’s hitting .316 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs and the surprising Cubs are in first place.
Front Office Sports alleged: “Sell Bryant now and the Cubs risk losing a division title and a playoff run. Hold on to him, and they risk a regression in the second half – or his decision to walk this winter with all the means to strike a deal elsewhere. “

It was totally unacceptable. When we found out several weeks ago, we terminated the third-party provider. We apologize to our players, staff and coaches. We will redouble our efforts to provide the best options for our team at all levels. https://t.co/yPzVWiCx1D
