Firefighters Cycle from LA to NY in 40 Days, Marking 20 Years Since 9/11, Raising 100,000 for Firefighter Charities | KSNF / KODE
JOPLIN, Mo. – This year marks two decades since September 11. The day that changed history. Joplin is a stopping point for a special group of firefighters.
15 firefighters, aged 26 to 72, will ride from Los Angeles to New York, marking the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. This 40-day cycling event will cover approximately 3,100 miles, over 101,482 feet of climbing and will pass through 14 states with stops at many fire departments and communities along the way. The runners will arrive in New York, NY on September 9, 2021.
Cyclists are a dedicated group of active and retired fire service cyclists who have a passion for our sport and a willingness to share it with others. California-based Fire Velo is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 cycling club. Fire Velo is committed to supporting many great causes and organizations within our firefighter and military service families. Firefighters on bikes to support first responders and veterans’ causes and organizations; honor those who sacrifice themselves for our freedoms. All funds raised through Fire Velo’s Ride For America will help provide financial assistance to groups and causes based on firefighters and military services. Our goal is $ 100,000.
Today, they cover 123.1 miles taking about 6 to 7 hours depending on the weather, flat tires and the finish on the hill should be in the late afternoon at Joplin.
The Riders represent the departments of California, Colorado, Washington, New
York, and many other states as we ride in remembrance of those lives lost in this
fateful morning 20 years ago. We also roll for the many lives lost due to cancer or
illnesses caused by fallout debris inhaled by first responders when searching for
the thousands of victims of September 11
We drive to raise awareness of cancer and mental well-being linked to the work of firefighters
of the fire department. Cancers related to the work of firefighters have increased dramatically in the past
years. We ride for the seriously injured veterans of our country. A lot of
seriously injured veterans need adequate housing to ease the daily burden of
perform basic tasks while enduring rehabilitation to reach normal. We
roll to raise funds and honor those who sacrifice for our freedoms and security.
