Cedar Falls theft suspect captured after short foot chase
An 18-year-old has been arrested on several counts relating to at least one theft in Cedar Falls.
John Martin, Jr., of the Parkersburg countryside was taken into custody after a short foot chase Tuesday morning. Authorities said a Cedar Falls public safety officer was slightly injured during the chase.
According to a press release, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of West 5th Street shortly after 7 a.m. to investigate a report of an ongoing theft. The appellant told authorities that a male suspect, dressed in black and carrying a backpack, was seen cycling around the neighborhood and entering vehicles.
Shortly thereafter, an area control officer found a man matching the suspect’s description. As the officer approached, the young man fled on foot to the 1300 block of W. 8th Street.
Public security officials said a passerby told the officer the suspect had just left a bicycle in his yard. The officer found the man in a fenced yard. The suspect jumped over the fence and ran into the backyards of houses on the 1200 block of W. 7th Street, where he was apprehended by authorities.
According to public safety officials, the bicycle Martin had in his possession was stolen during one of the thefts. Authorities said Martin also had marijuana in his possession at the time of his arrest.
Martin was incarcerated in the Black Hawk County Jail for interference causing injury, possession of marijuana and possession of stolen property. Cedar Falls public safety officials said the reported theft incidents were still under investigation.
