Bright campaign focuses on bike safety in Santa Cruz – Santa Cruz Sentinel

On Thursday, Community Bike Collective intern Christopher Aguilar installs a tail light on Mayahan Carmona’s bike as she stops on Soquel Avenue to add lights to her bike safety gear. The bike safety event was part of the City of Santa Cruz Street Smarts ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ safety campaign, where all cyclists in need of bike lights that have stopped have been fitted, free of charge, front and rear lights. Carmona, who cycles to her work at Santa Cruz High School, was among over 100 people who received lights during Thursday’s event. Since the start of the fall, the eight campaign events have been viewed by over 500 community members and over 1,000 bicycle lights have been installed. The “Be Safe, Be Seen” funding was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Thursday’s event included lights donated by Blackburn Design. The city has also hosted three “Be careful, be seen” pedestrian safety kiosks this fall and plans to hold five more in the coming weeks.
