Bike4Alz Coast-to-Coast Bike Ride for Alzheimer’s Disease
Since 2010, members of the Phi Gamma Delta Brotherhood (nicknamed “FIJI”) at Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY) have organized and run coast-to-coast bike tours every two summers to benefit Alzheimer’s disease research.
The first seven rides cost an average of between $ 60,000 and $ 70,000 each raised for charity. The 2021 ride is now underway, having started in San Francisco on May 22 and will end in Virginia Beach on July 28. Their goal for 2021 is to exceed the $ 100,000 in funds raised for the Alzheimer’s Association.
The group changed its name to Bike4Alz Inc. and was granted 501 (c) (3) charitable status by the IRS (EIN 47-5649817). All the profits from the 2021 race will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, either via the local sections or to the national organization. Each rider / driver was expected to raise approximately $ 1,500 to cover personal and shared group expenses during the 2020-2021 school year in order to participate, not including an adapted bike which can cost up to $ 1,000.
The 2021 Bike4Alz group of 12 riders and 2 riders will arrive in Blacksburg, Va. On Thursday, July 22, and will spend the next week heading east through Lexington, Charlottesville, Richmond, Williamsburg, and will finally complete their trip from 10 weeks. on the Virginia Beach boardwalk (“wet front wheels” in the Atlantic, after starting with “wet rear wheels” in the Pacific). Bike4Alz riders and riders are hoping for a repeat of the great experiences and big bucks raised from their previous trips to Virginia!
Thu July 22 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (approximately): Bike4Alz riders and support vehicles arrive at the Virginia Tech Drillfield, Memorial Chapel / Pylons.
