Authorities staged a bicycle accident at Pinecrest to help educate drivers and cyclists on safety
PINECREST, Florida – South Florida authorities are emphasizing bike safety for cyclists in the area.
The hope is to remind runners to stay alert by showing them the worst that could happen.
In order to get their message across, Florida Department of Transportation officials staged a mock bicycle accident, with an ambulance and even a possible casualty.
They hope to remind drivers and bikers to always follow the rules of the road.
The simulated scene was set up on Saturday morning in the village of Pinecrest.
The chosen location, directly across from Pinecrest Elementary School on 57th Avenue Southwest, is a very popular area among cyclists and certain groups of cyclists.
“Just make sure the riders know the rules of the road as well,” said Pinecrest Police Chief Jason Cohen. “They must understand that they must also obey all the rules of the road, stop at stop signs, at lights, because sometimes it is unfortunately the fault of the cyclists, and a cyclist against a car, it doesn’t matter. whose fault it is, never ends well for the cyclist.
Officers said they peaked with more than 100 cyclists in the early hours of the FDOT campaign and hope to speak to many more before they pack their bags around noon.
